Toll collection by electronic means only: Govt makes fast tags mandatory for four-wheelers

The government has made fast tags mandatory for all four wheelers. The government has announced that from January 1, 2021, fast tags will be mandatory for all four-wheelers, including older vehicles. The Ministry of Road Transport and National Highways has issued a notification to encourage payment of tolls only through fast tags.

Fast tags must be mandatory, including on older vehicles, by January 1, 2021. According to the Central Motor Vehicles Act 1989, Fastag was required to register new four-wheelers from December 4, 2017. It is supplied by automakers or dealers.

The Central Government has directed that fitness certificates should be renewed only after fast tags are affixed to transport vehicles. The notification also states that from October 1, 2019, fast fit tagging is mandatory for national permit vehicles.

Toll plazas will ensure that fees are paid only electronically. The move is also a step towards curbing the number of vehicles passing through toll plazas.

Fastag is a prepaid tag for paying small discounts on toll charges. Fastag based on Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID) may be attached to the vehicle’s windscreen. This system allows you to pay fees directly from your prepaid or savings account.
